In the 13 years of Laurence Dale’s artistic direction, the Evian Festival has become known for its dynamic and audience attracting programmes.

He has also proved his administrative skills as director of the Opéra Théâtre of Metz, rapidly placing it « among the five most significant opera houses in France ». He « changed the face of opera » in South Africa with the artistic direction of Opera Africa, drawing new and cross-section audiences and forming new talent from the townships.  

Prior to embarking on a very successful career as a stage director, Laurence Dale was one of the lyric tenors most in demand throughout the world starting with the celebrated production by Peter Brook of La Tragédie de Carmen in Paris, 1981.

He performed and recorded extensively under conductors such as Dohnanyi, Prêtre, Harnoncourt, Welser-Möst, Boulez, and Sir Colin Davis in the world's greatest opera houses and Festivals.

Working under directors as varied as Götz Friedrich, Ruth Berghaus, Jürgen Flimm, Robert Carsen, Peter Stein, Peter Brook and Patrice Chereau, he gained first-hand knowledge in stagecraft from the leading exponents in the field.

His production of Les Contes d’Hoffmann has been described as « historic » « .. this glorious production: opéra fantastique indeed » whilst his Ariadne auf Naxos for Monte Carlo Opera as « an apollonian splendor » and « of great intelligence » ….
